[COMIC] New York: I just can’t quit you

Living in NYC is like being in a toxic relationship. It’s expensive, demanding, and sometimes downright exhausting… but you just can’t quit it.

This week’s comic is all about the love-hate relationship we have with this city. From the endless stairs (why are there so many stairs?!) to … well, the high rents. Okay, most weeks I just gush about NYC (see last week’s post) but I’m not too proud to admit it’s hard and I don’t know why it just keeps me hooked. It just does and that’s okay! Other people don’t have to justify their decisions to live in the town where they were born-and-raised, or where they landed, so I won’t try now.

I hope you enjoy my comparison of NYC to a toxic partner!

Ways Living in NYC is like a toxic relationship
cartoon: Makes you feel dependent so you can't leave (subway, sidewalk with 24 hour laundromat and deli, restaurant with free delivery and person saying "why would i learn to drive?"
cartoon of woman with speech bubbles that say "my rent is crazy, my commute is long, my apartment is tiny, my street is loud, but it's worth it for those nice days..."
Cartoon: Makes you think you don't deserve better. Person standing next to garbage and rats saying "I'm so lucky to live here"
Cartoon: Woman with suitcase looking over shoulder with suitcase at sparkling skyline. "Looks shiny and alluring when you leave"
Cartoon: Makes sure you don't feel special. Lots of interesting people and a single person saying "hi?"
Cartoon that says "But it's home" with family waving next to construction site and apartment building.

I can admit living here can be tough, but whenever I leave New York I feel pulled right back and I work to celebrate this town and find the magic. And while most nights I sit at home watching TV as the boys ask for endless glasses of water, I can also randomly go to a Broadway show mid-week, as I’m doing with a friend tonight. Living here is a give and take.

Sometimes it’s really nice to think things through in doodles rather than writing. Here’s to finding the humor—and the love—in wherever we call home.
